Trackpac are proud to announce a collaboration with Algapelago, a pioneering company in seaweed farming. Algapelago was co-founded by entrepreneur Oliver Hicks, a world record-breaking adventurer, endurance athlete and highly regarded motivational speaker.

Sustainable seaweed farming has gained momentum as the ocean holds the key to a greener future. Algapelago, a pioneering seaweed farm, has partnered with Trackpac to ensure the secure tracking of buoys deployed at sea. This collaboration is crucial because of the vital need to maintain and recover their designated positions of Buoys, especially after stormy weather. As legislation tightens its grip, the convergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the marine industry presents a golden opportunity…

This collaboration also demonstrates the power of the community-powered Helium network, enabling efficient and reliable connectivity for IoT devices like the asset trackers deployed by Algapelago.

It may surprise many that approximately 70% of the world’s oxygen is generated by seaweed and algae. These incredible organisms play a crucial role in balancing our planet’s ecosystem by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen through photosynthesis. Recognising the importance of seaweed as a sustainable resource, entrepreneurs like Oliver Hicks have ventured into seaweed farming to harness its potential.

Seaweed farming offers numerous advantages over traditional agriculture and aquaculture practices. Seaweed is a rapidly growing marine resource that requires minimal resources to thrive. Unlike land-based crops, seaweed cultivation does not rely on freshwater, land, or fertilisers, making it an environmentally friendly alternative. By reducing the pressure on land and freshwater resources, seaweed farming helps mitigate the environmental impact of traditional agriculture.

One of the challenges seaweed farmers face is tracking the buoy systems that define the boundaries of their farms. To help address this issue, Trackpac has helped deploy Digital Matter Oyster 3’s powered by the Helium network. These devices, equipped with LoRaWAN technology, provide reliable and long-range connectivity, making them ideal for ocean environments with battery life measured in years.

This IoT solution enhances operational efficiency, improves farm management, and ultimately supports the growth of sustainable seaweed farming practices.

Seaweed farming holds immense promise for mitigating climate change, ensuring food security, and promoting sustainable economic development. Besides its role in oxygen production, seaweed offers a wide range of applications, including animal feed supplementation, natural fertilisation, carbon sequestration, and coastal ecosystem restoration. With the increasing demand for sustainable solutions, seaweed farms represent a frontier of opportunity, paving the way for a resilient and regenerative future.

The convergence of IoT technology and seaweed cultivation opens new avenues for sustainable marine farming. By leveraging IoT devices to monitor and optimise seaweed farms, we can enhance operational efficiency, protect the environment, and contribute to the fight against climate change. With its significant potential for oxygen production and numerous environmental benefits, seaweed farming presents a compelling case for embracing IoT in the smart sea movement. As we look towards the future, let us harness the power of IoT to breathe life into our oceans and secure a sustainable future for generations to come.
